How to Sell on Meta Muse With Your Shopify Store

If you run a Shopify store, you may already be selling on Meta Muse. Shopify shares your products with Meta by default, and eligible stores have Meta's direct checkout turned on automatically. To sell on Meta Muse well, you need to confirm you qualify, check your settings, clean up your product data and plan how you will track these sales.

Meta launched Muse, its new personal AI agent, on September 8, 2026. The same day, Shopify added Meta as an AI channel in the Shopify admin. Then on September 21, Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke announced that Shopify is partnering with Muse "to enable agentic checkout with Shop Pay on all Shopify stores." Here is what that means, and the five steps we would take this week.

Key takeaways

  • Muse is Meta's new AI agent. It can search for products and buy them for people. It is rolling out in the US.
  • Eligible Shopify stores are in by default. Products are shared with Meta, and Meta's direct checkout is on.
  • Muse finds Shopify products through Shopify Catalog, so your product data now does a lot of the selling.
  • Google Analytics and custom pixels don't fire in Meta's direct checkout. Plan your tracking now.
  • You can turn direct checkout off and still let shoppers find your products on Meta.

What is Meta Muse?

Muse is what Meta calls a personal AI agent. In its launch post, Meta says Muse "doesn't just answer questions, it actually does the work." It can send an email, book travel or turn a recipe Reel someone saved on Instagram into a grocery list. It can also shop and pay. For store owners, that last part is the big one. Muse works as an AI shopping agent: it can find products and check out for the shopper.

A few facts from Meta's announcement:

  • Muse is rolling out in the US on iOS, Android and muse.ai.
  • It is free for most of what people need, with paid plans for people who want to do more.
  • At launch, Muse could pay with Link by Stripe, and Meta said Shop Pay was "coming soon."

Free matters. A free tool from Meta can grow fast, so we think Shopify brands should get ready now, not next year.

How Meta Muse shops Shopify stores

When Muse shops Shopify stores, it finds products through Shopify Catalog. Think of Catalog as the product list Shopify shares with AI apps. Shopify's changelog says products are shared with Meta by default through Catalog. You can manage Catalog access and direct checkout in your settings.

From there, checkout works one of three ways, based on Shopify's help page on selling on Meta:

  1. Direct checkout (the default). The shopper pays inside Meta and never leaves. Shopify says this works across Meta, "including Muse when available."
  2. A handoff when needed. If the order needs information Meta can't collect, the shopper is sent to your store's checkout.
  3. Direct checkout turned off. Shoppers can still find your products on Meta, but they finish the purchase on your store.

When a shopper buys through Meta's direct checkout, the order shows up in your Shopify admin, credited to Meta. You fulfill it like any other order.

Not every retailer is on board. Social Media Today also reported that Amazon asked to be removed from Muse because of its rules against automated shopping tools. If you sell on both Amazon and Shopify, your Shopify listings are the ones to polish first.

What doesn't work in Meta's direct checkout

Shopify lists several things that aren't supported:

  • Subscriptions
  • Product bundles
  • Customizable products
  • B2B-only products
  • Local delivery, pickup in store and pickup points
  • Checkout blocks, and stores that make customers sign in before checkout

If most of your sales come from subscriptions or bundles, direct checkout won't help much today. Simple, one-time products are where this starts.

How to sell on Meta Muse: 5 steps for this week

1. Check your Agentic settings

Shopify calls this feature agentic storefronts. In your Shopify admin, go to Sales channels > Agentic. This is where Shopify lists its AI channels, including Meta.

To change Meta's settings yourself, Shopify says to first turn off "Allow Shopify to manage for me." Then click Meta, set Direct checkout the way you want and click Save. Even if you leave everything on, know what is live on your store.

2. Make sure you're eligible

Shopify's requirements for the Meta channel:

  • You sell to customers in the US, Canada or Mexico.
  • Your products are eligible for Shopify Catalog.
  • You have agreed to Shopify's Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service.
  • Your terms of service, privacy policy, and return and refund policy are filled out in Settings > Policies.

For Meta's shoppable ads, Shopify says you also need the Facebook & Instagram by Meta sales channel with product syncing turned on.

3. Fix your product data

Muse finds Shopify products through Catalog. So the words and details in each listing are what get you picked.

Say a shopper asks Muse for "a navy sweatshirt made of heavy cotton." Here is a made-up listing that would be hard to match, and a better version:

  • Weak: Title "The Classic." Description "Our best seller. You'll love it!" Options "Blue / Lg."
  • Strong: Title "Classic Crewneck Sweatshirt, Heavyweight Cotton." A description that covers the fabric, weight, fit, care and shipping time. Options named "Color: Navy" and "Size: Large."

Our quick checklist:

  • Titles: Say what the product is, plus the key detail, like material, size or use.
  • Descriptions: Answer what a shopper would ask. What is it made of? Who is it for? How does it fit? How fast does it ship?
  • Options: Use plain names like "Color" and "Size," not "Option 1."
  • Images: Show the product clearly, from more than one angle, and in use.
  • Price and stock: Keep them current, so no one gets sold something you can't ship.

4. Update your policies and disclosures

Shopify says to keep your product data and store policies, including your return and refund policy, up to date. That way, what shoppers see on Meta matches your store. If your products need legal disclosures, like warnings or ingredient notices, Shopify says to put them in the first 6,000 characters of the product description.

5. Plan how you'll track these sales

This is the step most brands will miss. Shopify says Google Analytics and custom pixels won't fire in Meta's direct checkout. Orders placed inside Meta are credited to Meta in your Shopify admin.

So if some shoppers start buying inside Meta instead of on your site, a few things can happen:

  • Your website conversion rate can drop, even if total sales hold steady.
  • Google Analytics can show fewer sales than Shopify does.
  • Your ad reports can look off if you only compare them to website data.

The fix is simple. Once a week, compare sales by channel in Shopify with your ad reports. Add a note for September 2026, when this started, so a shift in your numbers doesn't look like a problem.

Should you keep Meta's direct checkout on?

For most Shopify brands, our answer is yes, once your product data is clean. It is one more place to sell, and Shopify says there are no fees for selling in Meta's direct checkout. You pay only your standard payment processing fees.

We would turn direct checkout off if:

  • Your checkout does heavy lifting, like upsells or checkout blocks.
  • Most of your revenue comes from subscriptions or bundles.
  • You need customers to sign in first, like for member pricing.
  • You have pricing or wholesale deals that limit where your products can be sold.

Turning direct checkout off doesn't take you off Meta. Shopify says shoppers can still find your products there. They just finish buying on your store, where your checkout, pixels and upsells still work.

What this means for your Meta ads and content

Your Meta ads and Muse now lean on the same thing: the product data in your Shopify store. Shoppable ads depend on the Facebook & Instagram channel's product sync. Muse depends on Shopify Catalog. A messy catalog can hurt you in both places.

Content matters too. Remember Meta's own example of Muse turning a saved Instagram Reel into a grocery list. We read that as a sign of where this is going: the posts people save can turn into shopping lists. So make product videos that show what the item is, who it's for and how it works. That gives shoppers, and their AI agents, something worth saving.

That is the kind of work we build into our full marketing campaigns: content, copy, Meta ads and tracking that all work together.

Make the first delivery count

When someone buys inside Meta, they may never visit your website. Your box might be their first real look at your brand. Make it count:

  • Add an insert with a clear reason to join your email or text list.
  • Make reordering easy, like a QR code to the product page.
  • Follow up fast when someone joins, with a welcome message that shows your best products.
